Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing timely financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures. The role supports financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting while maintaining effective internal controls and identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes. The Senior Accountant also provides guidance to the accounting team and supports the Financial Controller in meeting financial and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting and Analysis

• Prepare and review monthly financial reports, including profit and loss statements and balance sheets.
• Record and analyze revenues, expenses, and other financial transactions accurately.
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and ensure all balances are supported by appropriate documentation.
• Analyze financial data, investigate discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare management reports, profitability analyses, and ad hoc financial reports to support business decisions.
• Ensure financial records are maintained accurately and in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures.

Budgeting and Forecasting

• Support the preparation of annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts.
• Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying significant variances and areas for improvement.
• Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business planning and decision-making.
• Assist the Financial Controller with financial reporting, forecasting, and profitability analysis.

General Accounting and Internal Controls

• Prepare and post general ledger journals, including accruals, prepayments, and other month-end adjustments.
• Review and approve journal entries within the assigned approval authority.
• Maintain the fixed asset register and ensure accurate recording of asset-related transactions.
• Maintain and recommend improvements to accounting controls, policies, and procedures.
• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities.
• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities to ensure accurate and timely processing.
• Assist in documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and improving accounting workflows.

Taxation and Compliance

• Assist with tax filings and other statutory and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Ensure accounting records and supporting documentation are maintained for reporting and audit purposes.
• Support internal and external audits by preparing financial schedules and providing requested documentation.
• Ensure financial reporting obligations and deadlines are met accurately and on time.

Stakeholder Management

• Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding accounting and financial queries.
• Coordinate with relevant departments to obtain financial information and resolve reporting issues.
• Provide timely and accurate financial information to management and other stakeholders.
• Recommend appropriate financial actions based on accounting analysis and business requirements.

Team Support and Development

• Provide guidance and oversight to accounting team members, particularly in accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Support the Financial Controller in coordinating the accounting team and monitoring daily financial operations.
• Review accounting work to promote accuracy, consistency, and compliance with established procedures.
• Share accounting knowledge and support the development of team capabilities.
• Contribute to process improvements and initiatives that enhance the efficiency of the finance function.

Specific Requirements

Expected Experience and Skills

• At least five years of relevant accounting experience in a similar role.
• Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end closing procedures.
• Experience in general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
• Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting.
• Knowledge of internal controls, audit processes, taxation, and regulatory compliance.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and numerical skills.
• Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and time management.
• Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and work collaboratively with accounting teams.
• Experience with ERP or financial accounting systems; NetSuite experience is preferred.
• Experience providing guidance or oversight to accounting team members is preferred.
• Willingness to work in Australia, New Zealand, UK, or North American business hours
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
• CPA or CA qualification is not required.
