Job Summary
The Customs Declarant is responsible for the accurate preparation and timely submission of import and export documentation. The primary goal is to ensure all shipments comply with national and international trade regulations, minimizing delays and avoiding financial penalties. You will be the point of contact for customs officials and will manage the calculation of duties, taxes, and tariff classifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Documentation Management: Prepare, review, and lodge customs entries (Import/Export/Transit) using electronic systems (e.g., E2M, ASYCUDA, or TradeNet).
- Tariff Classification: Accurately classify goods according to the Harmonized System (HS) Codes to determine correct duty rates and tax obligations.
- Compliance: Ensure all shipments adhere to government regulations, including permits, certificates of origin, and health/safety clearances.
- Financial Calculation: Calculate customs duties, VAT, and other applicable levies; facilitate payment requests for shipping lines and authorities.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary link between the company, freight forwarders, and customs officers to resolve queries, inspections, or documentation discrepancies.
- Record Keeping: Maintain meticulous digital and physical audit trails of all customs transactions for compliance reviews.
- Regulatory Updates: Stay informed on changing trade laws, free trade agreements (FTAs), and port procedures to advise the business on cost-optimization.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Customs Administration , Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, or international trade.
- Technical Skills: * Proficiency in local customs lodgment software.
- Strong knowledge of Incoterms 2020 .
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for data management and reporting.
- Certification: A Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) credential is often highly preferred or required depending on the region.
- Soft Skills: * Extreme attention to detail (a single wrong digit can cause major delays).
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and high-pressure environments.
- Strong ethical standards and integrity.
Success Metrics
- Lead Time: Average time taken for cargo release from customs arrival.
- Accuracy Rate: Percentage of declarations submitted without queries or amendments.
- Cost Savings: Utilization of FTAs or tax exemptions to reduce total landed costs.
