Kitchen Assistant Job Description
Position Summary:
A Kitchen Assistant supports the kitchen team in the preparation and maintenance of a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment. This role involves assisting with food preparation, cleaning, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation:
- Assist in basic food preparation tasks, such as washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients.
- Measure and prepare ingredients for recipes as directed by the chef or kitchen supervisor.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Wash and sanitize dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstations, kitchen surfaces, and storage areas.
- Dispose of waste appropriately and follow recycling procedures.
Stock Management:
- Assist in unloading, checking, and storing deliveries.
- Ensure ingredients and supplies are properly labeled and stored.
- Monitor inventory levels and report shortages to the supervisor.
Health and Safety:
- Follow food hygiene and safety guidelines to maintain a safe kitchen environment.
- Use kitchen equipment safely and report any maintenance issues or hazards.
Education:
- No formal qualifications are usually required, but a high school diploma or equivalent is beneficial.
- Food safety certifications (e.g., HACCP, ServSafe) are often preferred or required.
Experience:
- Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is advantageous but not always required for entry-level roles.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy items (e.g., up to 50 lbs).
- Stamina to work in a fast-paced, hot environment.
