A Construction Safety Officer (also known as a Safety Coordinator or Safety Manager) is responsible for ensuring that all safety regulations and practices are followed on construction sites. Their primary goal is to prevent accidents and injuries by promoting a safe work environment and ensuring compliance with safety laws and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safety Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of the construction site to identify hazards, unsafe practices, and compliance with safety standards.
- Safety Training: Provide safety training to workers, supervisors, and contractors on topics such as proper equipment use, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures.
- Risk Assessment: Evaluate risks and hazards on the site and recommend or implement corrective measures to prevent accidents or injuries.
- Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred): A degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
- General Construction Experience: Experience working in construction roles (e.g., laborer, foreman, supervisor) can be beneficial for understanding site operations and common hazards.
- OSHA Certification (Required):
- - OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification is a common requirement, though some employers may accept the OSHA 10-Hour Certification as a starting point.
- - Additional OSHA certifications, such as OSHA 510 (for Construction Industry Standards), are highly regarded.
- First Aid/CPR Certification (Required): Most employers require Construction Safety Officers to have current First Aid and CPR certifications.
