A cashier processes customer purchases, handles payments (cash, card, mobile), scans items, issues receipts, manages returns, and maintains an accurate cash drawer, typically using a point‑of‑sale system. Overview
Cashiers work in retail, grocery, food service, and other customer‑facing environments. They operate POS systems, interact with customers, and ensure transactions are accurate and efficient.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet customers and provide friendly service.
- Scan items and determine prices using POS systems.
- Process payments: cash, credit/debit, mobile wallets, gift cards, EBT, and coupons.
- Issue receipts, give change, and explain store policies.
- Handle returns, exchanges, and refunds per store policy.
- Maintain and reconcile the cash drawer at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Keep checkout areas clean, stocked, and organized.
- Assist customers with product locations and basic questions.
- Monitor for theft and follow loss‑prevention procedures.
