Paraplanner (Consulting Industry)

1. Job Summary

The Paraplanner provides high-level technical support to Financial Consultants by analyzing client financial data, conducting market research on investment products, and drafting comprehensive Statements of Advice (SoA) or suitability reports. This role ensures that all financial recommendations are accurate, compliant with regulatory standards, and tailored to the client’s specific goals.

2. Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Research: Conduct in-depth research on financial products, including insurance, superannuation/pensions, investments, and tax-efficient wrappers.
  • Financial Modeling: Use specialized software (e.g., Xplan, Voyant, or Morningstar) to create cashflow projections and stress-test various financial scenarios.
  • Report Writing: Draft detailed, compliant suitability reports and recommendation letters that explain the rationale behind a consultant’s advice.
  • Compliance & Audit: Ensure all files meet internal and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., SEC or equivalent international standards for offshore firms).
  • Client Data Analysis: Review "Fact Find" documents to identify gaps in client information and assess risk tolerance versus capacity for loss.
  • Implementation: Assist in the administrative execution of recommendations, such as processing investment switches or insurance applications.

3. Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accountancy, Economics, or a related field.
  • Experience: Typically 2–5 years in financial services; experience in a consulting firm or an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) environment is highly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in financial planning software and advanced Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas).
  • Certifications: (Optional but preferred) Progress toward a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation or international equivalent (e.g., CII Diploma).
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong analytical reasoning, and the ability to translate technical data into client-friendly language.
