Company truck drivers are responsible for safely transporting goods, inspecting vehicles, managing loading/unloading, and maintaining accurate logs of cargo and hours. Key duties include adhering to traffic regulations, planning efficient routes, performing routine maintenance, reporting issues, and ensuring on-time delivery. They must communicate with dispatchers and provide customer service.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Driving and Safety: Safely operating heavy trucks over long distances, adhering to traffic laws, DOT regulations, and company safety policies.
- Inspections: Conducting mandatory pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle’s mechanical systems (brakes, lights, tires).
- Cargo Management: Ensuring cargo is properly loaded, secured, and unloaded to prevent damage.
- Documentation: Keeping accurate, up-to-date logbooks (electronic or paper) of driving hours, mileage, fuel consumption, and cargo documentation.
- Communication: Reporting delays, accidents, or maintenance issues promptly to dispatchers.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Performing basic maintenance, such as refueling, cleaning, and checking fluid levels.
- Route Planning: Planning efficient routes using GPS and following delivery schedules.
Requirements and Skills
- License: Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Record: A clean driving record with no recent violations.
- Physical Ability: Ability to lift heavy objects and work long, flexible hours.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of, or ability to learn, Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and safety protocols.
