Senior API Designer (Banking Domain)

Job Summary We are looking for a Senior API Designer to support the bank’s API-first and integration strategy. This role is responsible for designing enterprise-grade APIs that connect digital channels, backend services, legacy systems, and external partners. You will work closely with business stakeholders, architects, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into clear, secure, and scalable API designs aligned with BIAN standards and modern integration practices. Key Responsibilities Design and maintain reusable, versioned REST APIs for internal systems, digital channels, and external partners. Create API specifications and contracts using OpenAPI/Swagger, including endpoints, payload models, and integration flows. Define and enforce API design standards covering naming, versioning, pagination, error handling, idempotency, and backward compatibility. Ensure API designs comply with security, governance, and regulatory requirements, including PCI and PII controls. Work with business and product teams to analyze requirements and define domain boundaries. Map business capabilities to BIAN service domains and design domain-aligned APIs. Break down business processes into stable domain models and service contracts. Design APIs that integrate with core banking platforms, legacy systems, middleware, and API gateways. Support modernization initiatives using patterns such as Anti-Corruption Layer, Strangler Fig, and domain decomposition. Provide guidance on synchronous vs asynchronous APIs, caching strategies, payload modeling, and error handling. Produce clear technical documentation, diagrams, and API catalogs. Collaborate with development, QA, DevOps, and SRE teams throughout the delivery lifecycle. Participate in architecture reviews, sprint planning, and solution design sessions. Required Qualifications 5+ years of experience as an API Designer, Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, or Integration Analyst within financial systems. Strong experience translating business requirements into technical API specifications. Hands-on experience with REST API design and JSON schema modeling. Proven use of OpenAPI / Swagger for API documentation and design. Background in banking, fintech, payments, or large-scale financial platforms. Technical Skills API & Integration REST API standards and OpenAPI 3.x API Gateways such as Apigee, Kong, WSO2, MuleSoft, or equivalent Event-driven messaging using Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, MSK, or EventBridge Legacy & Enterprise Integration
SOAP/WSDL, XML/XSD, JAX-WS
JDBC and database integration with legacy or core banking systems Experience applying Anti-Corruption Layer patterns Architecture & Design BIAN service domains and capability mapping Microservices architecture, Spring Boot preferred Event-driven patterns such as CQRS, Saga, Outbox, and event sourcing Security OAuth2, JWT, HMAC, and mTLS API rate limiting, throttling, and quota management Secure API design with PCI and PII compliance Tools Postman or Insomnia SwaggerHub, Stoplight, or Redocly Confluence, Jira Lucidchart or Draw.io Git or GitLab- ...cryptocurrencies and access a wide range of financial services.
