- Counseling: Provide individual or group counseling to help clients cope with life’s challenges, emotional difficulties, or mental health issues.
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) is typically required for entry-level positions. A master's degree in social work (MSW) is often required for clinical roles or advanced positions.
- Licensing: Depending on the region and position, social workers may need to be licensed or certified. For example, in the U.S., an MSW is often required to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
- Experience: Experience through internships or fieldwork is often required to gain practical skills. Some roles may require prior experience in a social services environment.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with clients, colleagues, and other professionals.
- Empathy and Compassion: Ability to provide emotional support and understand the challenges faced by clients in distressing or difficult circumstances.
