A Heavy Equipment Mechanic inspects, maintains, and repairs large machinery like bulldozers, excavators, and cranes, diagnosing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using manuals and diagnostic tools, performing preventative maintenance, replacing parts, and keeping detailed repair logs to ensure equipment reliability for construction, farming, or transport.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspection & Diagnosis: Perform thorough visual and computer-aided inspections of engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and electrical systems to identify malfunctions.
- Maintenance: Conduct routine servicing, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn fluids and filters.
- Repairs: Disassemble, repair, or replace defective or worn parts, using hand/power tools, welders, and hoists.
- Preventative Care: Implement scheduled maintenance to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.
- Component Overhaul: Test and rebuild major components like engines and hydraulic systems.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate logs of all work performed, parts used, and equipment condition.
- Site Visits: Travel to job sites to repair large, immobile equipment.
Essential Skills & Knowledge
- Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Tool Proficiency: Skilled with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic software, and welding equipment.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose complex faults efficiently.
- Manual Dexterity: Capable of heavy lifting (up to 75+ lbs) and physical tasks like climbing, crawling, and balancing.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous record-keeping and precise work.
- Safety Compliance: Adherence to strict safety regulations.
