Automation Engineer

SUMMARY  

The Automation Engineer is responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing automation solutions that streamline internal business processes and enhance the services delivered internally and externally. Working across teams, this role evaluates existing workflows and toolsets, then builds integrations and custom automations to eliminate manual effort, reduce errors, and scale service delivery. The Automation Engineer works closely with internal teams and management to learn how the business operates and find opportunities to improve it through technology.

This role operates at the intersection of IT operations and software development, requiring fluency in Company's core platforms — including ConnectWise, Microsoft 365, Azure and PIA — as well as proficiency in scripting, data tooling, and system integration. The Automation Engineer is expected to maintain thorough documentation of all solutions built and deployed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assess and document existing business processes across departments to identify automation opportunities and inefficiencies.
  
• Design, develop, test, and deploy automation solutions using ConnectWise, PIA, PowerShell, Python, and other approved platforms.
  
• Consume and integrate REST APIs and webhook-based triggers to connect ADNET's internal tools with third-party platforms.
  
• Write, maintain, and version-control scripts in PowerShell and Python using Git to support endpoint management, reporting, and workflow automation.
  
• Use SQL and Databricks to extract, analyze, and act on operational data to inform automation strategies and report on efficiency gains.
  
• Collaborate with business units and management to gather requirements and translate them into automated workflows.
  
• Participate in client-facing discussions where automation solutions directly impact client service delivery or onboarding.
  
• Maintain thorough documentation of all automations, integrations, and scripts in ADNET's knowledge management systems.
  
• Monitor deployed automations for reliability and performance; troubleshoot and remediate failures promptly.
  
• Identify recurring support issues and recommend or build proactive automation solutions to reduce ticket volume.
  
• Apply rigorous testing and QA practices before deploying any automation to production environments.
  
• Map and diagram business workflows prior to building automations to ensure solutions address root causes, not just symptoms.
  
• Implement proper error handling and exception management in all automations to ensure failures are surfaced and resolved quickly.
  
• Stay current with new capabilities in ConnectWise, M365, PIA, and the broader MSP automation ecosystem.
  
• Participate in team meetings; be prepared to discuss automation project status, blockers, and upcoming initiatives.
  
• Perform other responsibilities related to Automation Engineering as assigned by Manager.
  
• The Automation Engineer will be performing in a satisfactory manner when the following have occurred:
  
• Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation for all automations and integrations deployed.
  
• Automation solutions are delivered on schedule, thoroughly tested, and meet the requirements gathered from stakeholders.
  
• Measurable efficiency gains (e.g., reduced ticket volume, reduced manual effort) are tracked and reported regularly.
  
• Scripts and automations are reliable in production; failures are identified and resolved quickly with minimal disruption to clients or internal operations.
  
• Complete all time entries in real-time using correct grammar and punctuation; submit timesheets and ConnectWise entries daily.
  
• Collaborates effectively with other team members, sharing knowledge and supporting the broader team.
  
• Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including clients, regarding the status and impact of automation work.
  
• Maintains a positive attitude, professional presentation, and productive communication style that contributes to ADNET's collaborative work environment.
  
• Complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.
  
• Incorporates ADNET core values in the execution of duties.
  
• Understand and incorporate ITIL principles into ticket classification.
  
• Maintains progress toward career goals and objectives including furtherment of education and certifications.
  

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education / Experience: A minimum of an Associate's Degree or 3–5 years of equivalent technical experience in automation, systems integration, or a related IT discipline. MSP experience is strongly preferred. Experience in high-volume service environments with exposure to integration platforms, scripting, and business process improvement is a plus.
  
• Skill Level: Must possess working knowledge of automation design patterns, REST API consumption, and scripting in PowerShell and/or Python. Candidates should be comfortable operating across multiple platforms simultaneously and translating business process requirements into functional technical solutions. Experience consuming REST APIs and working with webhooks to trigger and integrate automated workflows is expected. Familiarity with version control practices using Git for managing and maintaining script repositories is required. Candidates should also have foundational knowledge of low-code and no-code platforms to complement heavier scripting work where appropriate.

TECHNICAL SKILS

• PowerShell: Scripting for endpoint management, automation of Windows environments, and integration with Windows, Azure and M365
  
• Python: Scripting for data processing, API integrations, and workflow automation
  
• SQL: Writing queries for data extraction, reporting, and process analysis
  
• Databricks: Working with data pipelines and analytics workflows to support operational insights
  
• REST API consumption: Connecting and integrating systems using existing APIs and webhook-based triggers
  
• JSON / data serialization: Reading, writing, and manipulating JSON data structures across automation platforms, scripts, and API integrations
  
• Security awareness in automation: Securing credentials and secrets, avoiding hardcoded sensitive values, and using secure vaults and environment variables in scripts and workflows
  
• Version control (Git): Managing, versioning, and maintaining script and automation code repositories
  
• Process mapping: Documenting and diagramming existing business workflows prior to automation design
  
• Error handling & exception management: Building automations that fail gracefully and surface issues clearly
  

Preferred Technical Skills

• Low-code / no-code platforms such as Make, n8n, or Power Automate flows for lighter-weight integrations
  
• Microsoft 365 / Power Automate: Building flows, managing tenant configurations, and automating M365 administrative tasks
  
• PIA (Process Integration & Automation): Platform configuration, workflow design, and integration management
  
• ConnectWise (Manage and/or Automate): Workflow automation, API integration, ticket management scripting, and RMM scripting
  
• Azure Logic Apps & Functions: Building event-driven workflows and serverless functions within the Azure ecosystem
  
• Reporting / BI awareness: Using Power BI or similar tools to surface automation metrics, efficiency gains, and operational insights to management
  
• Basic AI/ML awareness: Understanding where AI tools such as language models, OCR, or prediction APIs can augment automated workflows
  
• Basic understanding of Azure / Entra administration
  
• Experience documenting technical processes and maintaining knowledge bases
