Accountant with AU Experience

Main Purpose of Position

The Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the College’s financial records and reports. This role is responsible for End of month (EOM) close processes, including preparing journal entries, preparing financial reconciliations, producing financial statements, supporting audits, and identifying opportunities for process and systems improvements. The Accountant will work closely with the Financial Controller, the Accounts & Finance team, and other departments to support strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership and Strategy

· Prepare financial information to support executive decision-making.

· Prepare financial reports and data to support College’s strategic planning activities.

· Assist with the preparation of the annual budget and support long-term financial planning processes.

· Assist with the preparation of financial analysis and reports to support Board and executive leadership decision-making.

Financial Operations and Reporting

· Support all components within financial operations, including general ledger reconciliation, accounts payable/receivable, banking and payroll (accounting side only).

· Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.

· Support in monitoring cash flow, working capital, and financial health of the institution.

· Prepare financial reconciliations and end-of-month reporting processes.

Compliance and Risk Management

· Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards, tax regulations, and audit requirements.

· Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard college assets and ensure accurate financial data.

· Assist with audit processes, including preparing documentation and supporting external requests.

· Identify and escalate financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies to leadership.

Budget Management and Control

· Assist with the development, coordination, and monitoring of the college's annual budget.

· Monitor budget compliance and oversee budget performance tracking.

· Provide variance analysis and commentary to support operational decision-making.

· Assist in working with department heads by providing financial information to support planning and accountability.

Systems and Process Improvement

· Assist with maintaining financial systems to ensure they operate efficiently and meet the College’s needs. Assist in identifying and supporting improvements to financial processes, procedures, and systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Support data integrity and security within financial operations in accordance with established controls and policies.

· Assist with testing, documentation, and implementation of new financial tools and system enhancements, where required.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

· Assist in preparing and presenting financial information clearly to internal stakeholders, including non-financial staff.

· Assist in liaising with government agencies, funders, and other external bodies on financial matters, under the guidance of the Financial Controller.

· Support fundraising, grant reporting, and funding compliance requirements as needed.
